Task 15 - Ancillary Tasks - Billboard (Final)
As one of my ancillary tasks I was challenged with the task to make a Billboard to showcase and market my magazine. This was a task which I was really excited to complete since it would allow me to showcase my design abilities. To create my design used photoshop since I thought that it would allow me to create a much more intricate and detailed design than if I were to use, for example, word or publisher.
My design conforms to the typical codes and conventions of other billboards I have seen for magazines in my research and in particular I based my billboard on the design of a billboard for The Resident London magazine (a similar Regional Magazine).
Here is my initial design of my Billboard:
This billboard effectively shows what my magazine is all about by carrying through the design of my magazine and showing a blurred sleek peek into what will be inside the magazine. Furthermore, you can see that the winter theme has been clearly carried through in order to show a clear link to the season, something prevalent in other designs.
In order to get an idea of what it may look like in the 'real world' I decided to put it on an underground billboard found at a train station. This is the type of place i'd imagine my magazine would be marketed as it is mainly targeted towards young commuters and by advertising here it would grab their attention and hopefully lead to people picking it up. By placing it here, it would help my magazine to get recognised.

Task 6: Media Consumption
During my research I had decided that I needed to get an idea of how magazines are consumed by readers and what sort of things should be included in my in my final production. Therefore, I decided to use google forms to conduct market research using the following questionnaire

The results were as follows:

These results are vital since they mainly come from the demographic that I aim on marketing my magazine towards. their opinions are crucial in helping to put together a magazine which both looks good to me, but also the main target audience. Through my results I can see that whilst people still seem to still read magazines, the number is decreasing with only 50% of the people asked actually reading any type of magazine. This result is shocking to me, a person who enjoys reading magazines so I decided to find out more. When finding out the reasons why people do not read them, people stated that they are either not interested nor do they have the time to read them. This has prompted me to think more carefully about how I should construct my magazine in a way that it is easy to read and quick in order to satisfy the target markets needs. additionally, it has highlighted to me that I must keep in some key features that people like from magazines such as interesting stories, relevant fashion and 'whats on' guides.
It would seem from my results that the majority of people find magazines in small convenience stores and local grocery shops which means that my magazine would have to be able to stand out from a shelf full of other magazines and thus need to be vibrant and colourful (as indicated in the questionnaire). In addition, I found out that Vogue was the most recognisable magazine for my target market, however very little was known about regional magazines and so I need to focus on gaining inspiration from these magazines in order to gain the target markets interest in regional magazines. It indicates that maybe regional magazines should be revamped for my target audience as they tend to have an older reader demographic.
I also found out that photography is hugely important to a magazine, especially if readers want to be able to read something quick as pictures and images add an element of interest. This means that the pictures in my magazine should be both eye-catching and stand out. From my questionnaire I also have found that my house style is essential and must be carried through in order to be successful.
Furthermore, I have found that people were uncertain whether they would pick up a regional magazine about London, this may mainly be to do with a lack of interest which can be fixed by making my magazine tailored to the reader by incorporating what they want from a magazine as well as being creative in terms of design. Moreover, I asked a range of questions about peoples ideas of regional magazines and from this I have gained a wealth of understanding of my genre and this will help me to create a successful magazine.
